# The Synergy Reef Shadow Overflow

# V1, V2 & V3 Overview

Basic Understanding of the Shadow V1, V2 & V3 Overflow

Thank you for choosing the Synergy Reef Shadow® Overflow. The original Shadow V1 was introduced in 2016. The V2 was released January of 2020. And the V3 was released on March of 2022.&#x20;

They all have a sticker located on the bottom of the rear overflow with a serial number.&#x20;

* V1 Serial Numbers 0000-5000 - The sticker will only say "Shadow Overflow"
* V2 Serial Numbers 5000-7000 - The sticker will say "V2 Shadow Overflow"
* V3 Serial Numbers 7000+ - The sticker will say "V3 Shadow Overflow"

**The holes that are Drilled into the tank all use the same template for V1, V2 & V3. Nothing has changed in the hole patterns.** &#x20;

The V3 now includes a ***Quiet Flow™ Weir*** design which uses an internal plate inside the front box of the overflow. Please make sure to remove the tape that holds this in place during shipping. The Front weir plate may also need to be removed and cleaned from time to time, but should be almost maintenance free. # What's Needed to Install The Shadow® V2 or V3 Overflow

Tools and other items needed to install.

***Prior to installation, be sure that you have everything you will need to complete the installation. This includes, but is not limited to the following:***

* [ ] Aquarium, either glass or acrylic. Your aquarium thickness must be from .25" (1/4") up to .75" (3/4") If it’s glass, please make sure the panel of glass that you are going to drill is NOT TEMPERED! If you are uncertain about this then STOP and please contact the tank manufacturer. If you attempt to drill a tempered panel, it will shatter.
* [ ] Cordless drill with adjustable clutch. We recommend the use of a cordless drill to avoid electrocution, as water needs to be applied over the hole saw during drilling. The clutch will limit torque transfer to the glass, reducing the chances of cracking the glass. Always set your torque (clutch) to the lowest level on the drill and adjust accordingly, patience is a virtue when drilling glass.
* [ ] Drilling template (included with the Shadow V2-V3 Overflow Kit and you can download it here\

* [ ] Tape measure, to determine mounting location.
* [ ] Permanent Marker or wax pencil to mark mounting location.
* [ ] Spring clamps and/or double sided tape to hold the template in place while you drill.
* [ ] Water source. Spray bottle, garden hose, bucket, etc…
* [ ] &#x20;Correct Holesaw:\
  We recommend a [63 mm Diamond Holesaw](https://synergyreef.com/products/63mm-diamond-holesaw-bit-retail) for best results. If a 63 mm is not available, you can also use a 65 mm Diamond Holesaw for any of our 16” Shadow V1, V2 or V3 Overflows. But a 63mm is the best option. \
  – For glass you will need to purchase a diamond coated holesaw bit\
  – For acrylic you will need a standard holesaw bit with teeth sold at most home improvement stores.
* [ ] Synergy Reef Shadow Overflow Kit.
* [ ] 1.5” PVC for internal box and external plumbing. We have pre cut [Internal pipe kits](https://synergyreef.com/products/overflow-internal-pipe-kit-1-5-pvc-all-colors) available here in many colors.

# Drilling Your Aquarium

How to drill your aquarium

***Drilling Procedure:***

### Determine your desired water level:

1. &#x20;We find with typical applications within our recommended flow rates the water level in our boxes will rise ¼” to ½” (depending on your GPH of flow) from the bottom of the teeth slots. So mark the drilling template about 1” below the top and this is a rough guide as to where you water level will be. Use this measurement to determine where you would like to place your internal overflow box.&#x20;
2. Once you have your desired water level determined you can measure and mark how far down the holes will be from the top of the tank using our template. We recommend a minimum 1.5 to 2 inches from the water level to the top of the tank for rimless aquariums. Tanks with plastic bracing or euro bracing, the water level will be higher (depending on where the trim is located). Leave 1/8” to ¼”  Max Clearance from inside trim to top of template so there is no interference with the trim and front box. The rear box will fit below the outside trim in this configuration.&#x20;
3. Now locate the drilling template where you have determined you need to drill the hole(s). Note that the template is the same outline as the actual Front Overflow Box. Make sure the template is in the CORRECT UP orientation. Manually align the template on the inside of the aquarium and MARK the holes with your marker.
4. After marking the holes locations, use the Rear Overflow Box and align it to the circles you just drew on the aquarium. If the rear box aligns with the holes and is not hitting the rear plastic trim on trimmed tanks (make sure to test with the lid on the rear box as well), then you are ready to mount the template and drill. Mount the drilling template on the outside of the aquarium. You can use duct tape to mount the template, although we do recommend using spring clamps to hold it in place. DO NOT use screw type clamps, these can cause too much localized stress and crack your glass!
5. Make sure to protect the opposite panel and position a bucket or reservoir to catch the plug when it drills through. Also if placing a bucket on the glass, protect the glass from the bucket by placing a piece of paper towel and/or clean cardboard so that the bucket doesn’t scratch the tank.
6. Ideally you will use a cordless drill with an adjustable clutch that can be set very light. This will prevent extra force on the glass should you bind the bit during drilling. It is now time to start drilling!! Pour some regular old water in the template hole to cool and lubricate the hole saw, you will want to keep the bit wet through the whole drilling process. The provided template will keep your hole saw in place. Water will channel thru the template. This is normal and helps cool the drill bit.
7. After drilling for a bit you should be able to remove the hole saw from the template and see a groove starting in the glass. Once you see this groove you may want to remove the drilling template; it has served its purpose. Be sure to start both holes before removing the template.
8. Remember to keep the hole-saw wet through the process for cooling and lubrication. As you get near to the end of drilling the hole you will see the water start to leak through, this is the sign that you are close. At this point you will want to use very light pressure and patience to minimize chip out on the opposite side. However, some chips is normal and likely so don’t worry about them as the gasket will cover and seal them.
9. Once you drill both holes, clean up the drilling mess and dry the aquarium and proceed to install the boxes.


# Drilling Return Holes

You will need to have return bulkheads in your aquarium for the return pump to flow water back into your aquarium. To drill these you will need the following.&#x20;

* [ ] 35mm Diamond Holesaw Bit <https://synergyreef.com/product/35mm-diamond-holesaw-bit/>

Follow the [Drilling Your Aquarium](/installation-manuals/the-synergy-reef-shadow-overflow/drilling-your-aquarium) instructions for the drilling procedure.&#x20;

Where you install them is up to you, but we recommend about 2" below the top of the aquarium.


# Attaching the Overflow to the Tank

Make sure to support the external plumbing properly to avoid any weight pulling down on the overflow rear box. The overflow was NOT designed to have the plumbing hanging from it. This can cause small leaks near the gaskets. We sell a few different pipe hanging clips here:  [1.5″ Clic Clip](https://synergyreef.com/product/1-5-clic-clip-for-pvc-support/) or [1.5″ Cobra Clip](https://synergyreef.com/product/1-5-cobra-clip/) that can assist with securing the external pipes to your aquarium stand.

1. Remove the 2 x rear locking nuts from the front overflow box.&#x20;
2. Place 1 gasket on each of the bulkheads on the front overflow box and mount the Shadow V2 Overflow inside the aquarium by inserting the bulkheads through the holes in the aquarium (you may have just drilled these holes inside of the tank). This gasket will be between the front overflow box and the tank.&#x20;
3. Place the remaining 2 Gaskets over each bulkhead on the outside of the tank. These gaskets will be between the tank and the external box.
4. Insert the external box through the bulkheads and secure it in place with the 2 locking nuts your removed earlier and hand tighten. Over tightening the bulkheads can cause the gaskets to leak.&#x20;
5. See figure A.1 on this page for proper gasket placement.
6. Remove the rear box from your tank and your overflow is now ready to plumb any way you choose. \*\*Remove the Rear Box from tank prior to gluing pipes to avoid damage.

# Exterior Rear Box


# EXTERIOR REAR BOX: Gluing & Initial Planning

NOTICE\* ***The external holes for the pipes in the rear box are made slightly larger than 1.5" PVC Pipe. They are designed to fit 40mm JIS pipe as well (Metric). They may be loose fitting with US Imperial PVC. This is normal***. ***Some imperial PVC pipe or fittings may seem very loose, again this is normal. The pipes will glue in perfectly fine. Once glued, t*****he glue will fill in the space between the Pipe and overflow hole when glued and will seal fine and not leak. Just look  into the fitting as you are gluing it in place and look for any gaps.**&#x20;

You can use 1.5" PVC directly into the bottom of the overflow. Or you can reduce it down to 1" if needed with 1.5" to 1" PVC Reducers. We recommend for systems with LOW FLOW rates (under 1500 GPH) to reduce the pipes down to 1". The flow rate of the overflow will be less than 1500 GPH if reduced to 1" drains.  The full 1.5" drains are better for higher flow systems, but can used with low flow systems without any issues as well. &#x20;

#### Attach 3 short pieces (approx. 4”) of 1.5” PVC to the bottom of the rear box. ([4” Pre Cut kits](https://synergyreef.com/product/overflow-external-pipe-kit-1-5-pvc-red/) are available here). If using 1" PVC you will need 3 x 1.5" to 1" Reducers. You can glue them directly into the bottom of the rear box.  Your internal pipes can stay 1.5" and do not need reducers.

#### We recommend you using Medium or Heavy Clear PVC Cement on outside of the rear box when gluing the PVC pipes to it. We have found that any PVC Cement will work, but care needs to be used when gluing to make sure the ports do not get excessive glue inside the openings. If the proper amount of glue is used it will not take any force to push the pipes into the ports. See figure A.2 Below:

We recommend that you attach 3 x 1.5” Unions (3 x 1" if you have reduced the pipes to 1") to the 3 pieces you just glued into the bottom of the rear box. This will allow for easy removal of the overflow if needed in the future or for moving the overflow to another tank later. Unions are not necessary but make for a better installation.

We do NOT recommend using flexible PVC or vinyl tubing on the drains. The quietest operation will be using rigid PVC. Flexible PVC or Vinyl tubing also can reduce the flow rate of the overflow significantly!

# What Glue Type?

***What Glue can I use to install the pipes on the bottom of the rear box?***

* You can use any glue made for ABS or PVC. We recommend using any standard medium or heavy clear PVC Glue.
* Primer is not needed. Just use PVC glue.


# Interior Rear Box Plumbing

{% hint style="warning" %} <mark style="color:red;">This is an Advanced Level product. Due to hundreds of different aquarium plumbing setups, pumps, sumps, ect, Synergy Reef DOES NOT Provide specific tuning assistance with this overflow. We can provide basic installation assistance, but setup and tuning to your aquarium is up to you. This can be done by anyone as long as you take the time to properly setup your system. Proper plumbing of the overflow to the sump also plays a big part in turning the overflow, not just the internal plumbing. If you are not capable of doing this, please hire a professional to do so.</mark>

### ***Interior Box Tuning***

***DO NOT GLUE THE INTERNAL PIPES AND BOX TOGETHER***

On the V1, Dry fitting it all that is needed. — Be careful not to crack the fittings.&#x20;

**Important Note:**

{% hint style="warning" %}
*For the v2 and V3 - The inside holes for the pipes in the rear box are made slightly larger than the PVC Pipes. The color PVC has slightly smaller tolerance than white PVC. The inside pipes will be slightly loose. This is normal.*&#x20;

1. &#x20;*Put a small amount of PVC glue on the ends of the pipes and let it dry.*
2. *It may take 2-3 layers, but the pipes will fit tightly into the holes after that is applied.*&#x20;

&#x20;*Do not glue them into the inside of the box, just put glue on the pipes themselves and create a small layer of glue and let it dry. The pipes will fit tightly as the glue acts like a gasket.*

The length of the pipes used inside the rear box are determined by your system's design and setup. There is not a "one size fits all" answer to what you may need on your system.  You may need to adjust the lengths of the pipes to work with your system. # Rear Box Lid

***TheShadow® Overflow Rear Box Lid is designed like no other. It is able to create a water tight seal on the rear box assembly. This assists in noise reduction, preventing salt creep and stopping water from exiting the rear box. This lid creates a Vacuum that assists with the flow of water down the drains. Th sealed lid makes it impossible for the overflow box to well, overflow. There is no other overflow system on the market with this attention to detail and precision fitting lid.***&#x20;

# Internal Front Box

Inside Aquarium Front Box

All of our Shadow® Overflows use our ***Snap Fit™ Weir*** design. This allows for the front weir to be secured in place and not fall off into your aquarium. It is also designed to be easily removable it cleaning is needed. Our Zero Clearance weir allows you to remove the weir without any interference with your aquariums trim or eurobracing. Here is how to Remove the Front Snap Fitting Weir from the overflow:

# Leaks / Gasket Issues

Troubleshooting Gasket Leaks

Please watch this video to see how to properly install the Shadow onto your aquarium to prevent leaks.&#x20;

### Gasket Leaking:

* Are the gaskets aligned correctly?&#x20;
  1. The gaskets need to be centered over the holes in the tank to seal properly. If they are not centered they can get pulled into the hole when tightening the bulkhead causing small drips or leaks.&#x20;
  2. Watch the video "Installation onto an aquarium" for proper alignment of the gaskets.&#x20;
* Check that the bulkhead nuts are securely tightened. DO NOT Overtighten with any tools or wrenches. The gaskets were designed to be sealed with hand force only and may leak if overtightened.
* Check the holes in the aquarium:
  1. Are they the correct size (63-65mm)? We recommend using 63mm holesaw for the best seal. 64mm or 65mm will take a little more effort to make sure the hole is covered properly with the gasket.   Holes that are too large will not seal properly.&#x20;
  2. Is there and scalloping or chips in the holes of the class/acrylic? The holes need to be clean and chip free for the best seal.&#x20;
* Is the glass or acrylic clean where the gaskets need to seal?&#x20;
  1. Is there paint or other material on the aquarium surface? Remove any paint or debris from the area. Gasket on Glass/Acrylic are going to give the best seal.&#x20;
  2. Clean with Isopropyl Alcohol (glass only) and reseat the gaskets.&#x20;
* Is the plumbing secured?&#x20;
  1. Make sure that the Rear Box PVC pipes are secured to the aquarium stand and not just hanging below the box. This will cause the overflow to not seal properly on the gaskets.  The pipes when full of water will be very heavy and will pull down on the rear box causing the gaskets to unseal.&#x20;
  2. We recommend the Quick Clips we use in our installation video for the best way to secure the pipes properly.&#x20;
  3. Pipes need to be secured as close to the external overflow box as possible.&#x20;
* Hand Tighten the bulkhead nuts ONLY. Do NOT use any tools to tighten the bulkhead nuts. Overtightening can and will cause leaks to happen by over compressing the gaskets.&#x20;

### For systems that have been setup for extended periods:&#x20;

* If a small drip has formed over time, it can also be caused by any of the above mentioned issues. We also recommend the following procedure:
  1. Drain the aquarium to a level below the 2 drilled holes in the back glass/acrylic.
  2. Remove the bulkhead nuts and take the front weir box out of the aquarium.&#x20;
  3. Remove the rear box at the Unions if you use them.
  4. Remove all 4 bulkhead gaskets and soak them in a solution of warm water and mild dish soap for about 30 mins. THe Gaskets are made from a TPO material that will never need replacing. Unless there is a major defect in the gaskets, they will last forever when properly cared for.&#x20;
  5. Use warm water and a mild dish soap with a cloth and thoroughly clean and dry the area where the overflow gaskets were connected to the rear of the aquarium. On glass aquariums it's ideal to use Isopropyl Alcohol to clear the area after the soap.&#x20;
  6. Proceed to then follow the steps above for "Gasket Leaking" when reinstalling the rear box.&#x20;


# Salt Creep

How to avoid Salt Creep on the Shadow Overflow

### What is Salt Creep Formation:

Salt Creep is a natural occurrence with saltwater aquariums and is common. It is formed when saltwater dries up in the air on a hard surface. The Rear Box Lid is designed to create a water tight seal on the rear box assembly to stop any water from exiting the rear box. This also creates a vacuum that helps in water flow. But it is possible for small amounts of water to seep out. Especially with high flow systems.&#x20;

### How to 100% Eliminate Salt Creep:

The rear box lid can be wiped down with a wet towel during regular maintenance to prevent salt creep. If you find that you are getting salt creep on the outside of the rear box, then take the lid off the box and dry it completely. Use the below Silicone grease and squeeze it inside the small channel of the edge of the lid. Make sure to put it all the way around the whole lid seal. This will 100% stop any salt creep from exiting the rear box.&#x20;

***If you do get any salt creep formation on the V2 or V3, we recommended that you use Danco Silicone Faucet Grease (Can be found on Amazon or any local big box hardware store), or any plumbers silicone grease, and apply it on inside the channel of the lid. # Noise

Basic Noise Troubleshooting

Due to hundreds of different aquarium plumbing setups, pumps, sumps, ect, Synergy Reef DOES NOT Provide specific tuning assistance with this overflow. We can provide basic installation assistance, but setup and tuning to your aquarium is up to you. This can be done by anyone as long as you take the time to properly setup your system. Proper plumbing of the overflow to the sump also plays a big part in turning the overflow, not just the internal plumbing. If you are not capable of doing this, please hire a professional to do so.

There are many reasons for noise with any overflow system. Every system is going to be slightly different due to various factors in your design, flow and installation of the plumbing. While we would love to have a blanket answer for everyone's setup, that just isn't the case. You will need to look at your system and evaluate what may be causing the noise in your system.&#x20;

***Here are some important things to look for in your setup to begin troubleshooting:***

* Trickling noise in the front box can be cause by improper external box pipe lengths. The water level in the rear box should be over the incoming bulkheads to raise the water level as high as possible in the rear box. Low water level can cause excessive noise in the front box.
  * Check you internal pipe lengths and make sure they are set properly for your flow rates. Different rates will require different pipe lengths.&#x20;
* Was the proper gate valve used? Do not use a ball valve, only use a gate valve to properly tune the overflow. &#x20;
* Are your sump drain pipes submerged under water? They need to be submerged and small slits cut into them just below the water surface.&#x20;
* Are there any internal flow pumps in the aquarium or are your returns pointed at the surface of the water?
  * &#x20;If so, are they pointed at the overflow front weir or disrupting the water surface? This will introduce noise into the front weir.&#x20;
    * Try angling the flow pumps away from or down away from the surface in your aquarium.
    * Our V3 Front Weir plate can help eliminate the noise produced by these pumps, but the flow should be redirected first.&#x20;
    * If you have a V2 overflow you can upgrade the front box to the V3 with this plate. Contact us for more information. <br>
* &#x20;How long has the aquarium been running?
  * New setups will have some initial noise. Don't chase the noise. This is due to the pipes of the system being new. Overtime a biological slime will build up on the inside of the overflow components and the inside of the pipes of the system. This can take up to a few months depending on the system type.
* What is your flow rate of the Pump to your tank? Are you running a over 2500 GPH? Try reducing the flow rate.&#x20;

## Shadow® V1 Overflow Installation Instructions – How to Install the Shadow® V1 Overflow

***Installation Instructions:***\
Thank you for choosing the Synergy Reef  V1 Shadow® Overflow. *Please note that these instructions are ONLY For the V1 Version of the Shadow® Overflow. The V1 has a serial number of 4999 and below.* This is a Do-It-Yourself project and can be installed in either glass or acrylic\
aquariums. Always keep in mind that working with power tools, glass and acrylic have inherent dangers, including personal injury, electrocution, accidental death, or\
cracked glass, so please be careful and wear gloves, shoes, pants, eye protection, etc… If you have any questions or concerns, please [contact us](https://synergyreef.com/contact-us/).

Prior to installation, be sure that you have everything you will need to complete the installation. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

1. Aquarium, either glass or acrylic, if it’s glass please make sure the panel you are going to drill is NOT TEMPERED! If you are uncertain about this\
   then STOP and please contact the tank manufacturer. If you attempt to drill a tempered panel, it will shatter.
2. Cordless drill with adjustable clutch. We recommend the use of a cordless drill to avoid electrocution, as water needs to be applied over the hole saw\
   during drilling. The clutch will limit torque transfer to the glass, reducing the chances of cracking the glass. Always set your torque (clutch) to the\
   lowest level on the drill and adjust accordingly, patience is a virtue when drilling glass.
3. Drilling template (included with the Shadow V2-V3 Overflow Kit and you can download it here\
   [Shadow Overflow Drilling Template](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0891/0346/6781/files/Synergy_Reef_Drilling_Template_16_Shadow.pdf.pdf?v=1724331333)).
4. Tape measure, to determine mounting location.
5. Permanent Marker or wax pencil to mark mounting location.
6. Spring clamps and/or double sided tape to hold the template in place while you drill.
7. Water source. Spray bottle, garden hose, bucket, etc…
8. &#x20;Correct Holesaw:\
   We recommend a [63 mm Diamond Holesaw](https://synergyreef.com/products/63mm-diamond-holesaw-bit-retail) for best results. If a 63 mm is not available, you can also use a 65 mm Diamond Holesaw for any of our 16” Shadow V1, V2 or V3 Overflows. But a 63mm is the best option. \
   – For glass you will need to purchase a diamond coated holesaw bit\
   – For acrylic you will need a standard holesaw bit with teeth sold at most home improvement stores.
9. Synergy Reef Shadow Overflow Kit.
10. 1.5” PVC for internal box and external plumbing. We have pre cut [Internal pipe kits](https://synergyreef.com/products/overflow-internal-pipe-kit-1-5-pvc-all-colors) available here in many colors.

***What Glue can I use to install the pipes on the rear box?***

* Use only these following solvents on the Rear Box fittings:
  * We recommend using [Rectorseal® Mike 425L](https://www.amazon.com/Rectorseal-55970-Pint-425L-Multi-Purpose/dp/B0041OICKG?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q\&tag=duckduckgo-d-20\&linkCode=xm2\&camp=2025\&creative=165953\&creativeASIN=B0041OICKG)  as the best solvent. If that cannot be found then Standard Clear Medium PVC Cement (Sold at local hardware stores) will also work, but may cause crazing on the rearbox fittings. This crazing could affect the fittings in some cases.
* \*\*\*DO NOT USE the any of the following as they can damage the Rear Box:
  * ABS TO PVC Transition cement (Teal Colored glue)
  * Purple PVC Primer. This can damage the ABS plastic. This is also stated on the PVC primer can.

***Drilling and Installing:***

1. Determine your desired water level. We find with typical applications within our recommended flow rates the water level in our boxes will rise ¼”\
   to ½” (depending on your GPH of flow) from the bottom of the teeth slots. So mark the drilling template about 1” below the top and this is a rough guide\
   as to where you water level will be. Use this measurement to determine where you would like to place your internal overflow box. Once you have\
   your desired water level determined you can measure and mark how far down the holes will be from the top of the tank using our template. We\
   recommend a minimum 1.5 to 2 inches from the water level to the top of the tank for rimless aquariums. Tanks with plastic bracing or euro bracing,\
   the water level will be higher (depending on where the trim is located). Leave 1/8” to ¼” Clearance from trim to top of template so there is no\
   interference with the trim and front box.
2. Now locate the drilling template where you have determined you need to drill the hole(s). Note that the template is the same outline as the actual\
   Front Overflow Box. Make sure the template is in the CORRECT UP orientation. Manually align the template on the inside of the aquarium and\
   MARK the holes with your marker.
3. After marking the holes locations, use the Rear Overflow Box and align it to the circles you just drew on the aquarium. If the rear box aligns with\
   the holes and is not hitting the rear plastic trim on trimmed tanks (make sure to test with the lid on the rear box as well), then you are ready to mount\
   the template and drill. Mount the drilling template on the outside of the aquarium. You can use duct tape to mount the template, although we do\
   recommend using spring clamps to hold it in place. DO NOT use screw type clamps, these can cause too much localized stress and crack your\
   glass!
4. Make sure to protect the opposite panel and position a bucket or reservoir to catch the plug when it drills through. Also if placing a bucket on the\
   glass, protect the glass from the bucket by placing a piece of paper towel and/or clean cardboard so that the bucket doesn’t scratch the tank.
5. Ideally you will use a cordless drill with an adjustable clutch that can be set very light. This will prevent extra force on the glass should you bind the\
   bit during drilling. It is now time to start drilling!! Pour some regular old water in the template hole to cool and lubricate the hole saw, you will want\
   to keep the bit wet through the whole drilling process. The provided template will keep your hole saw in place. Water will channel thru the template.\
   This is normal.
6. After drilling for a bit you should be able to remove the hole saw from the template and see a groove starting in the glass. Once you see this groove\
   you may want to remove the drilling template; it has served its purpose. Be sure to start both holes before removing the template.
7. Remember to keep the hole-saw wet through the process for cooling and lubrication. As you get near to the end of drilling the hole you will see the\
   water start to leak through, this is the sign that you are close. At this point you will want to use very light pressure and patience to minimize chip out\
   on the opposite side. However, some chips is normal and likely so don’t worry about them as the gasket will cover and seal them.
8. Once you drill both holes, clean up the drilling mess and dry the aquarium and proceed to install the boxes.
9. Remove the locking nuts from the front overflow box. Place 1 gasket on each of the bulkheads on the front overflow box and mount the Shadow\
   Overflow by inserting the bulkheads through the holes you just drilled from the inside of the tank, this gasket will be between the front overflow box\
   and the tank. Get another gasket and put it over each bulkhead on the outside of the tank. This gasket will be between the tank and the external box.\
   Insert the external box through the bulkheads and secure it in place with the 2 locking nuts your removed earlier and hand tighten. Over tightening\
   the bulkheads can cause the gaskets to leak. See figure A.3 on next page.
10. Remove the rear box from your tank and your overflow is now ready to plumb any way you choose. We recommend using 3 small pieces of 1.5”\
    PVC ([4” Pre Cut kits](https://synergyreef.com/product/overflow-external-pipe-kit-1-5-pvc-red/) are available here) and connection these to the rear box and attaching unions to each. See figure A.2 for details. This makes it easier to remove or attach the pipes if needed for\
    maintenance.

Make sure to support the external plumbing properly to avoid any weight pulling down on the overflow rear box. The overflow was\
NOT designed to have the plumbing hanging from it. We sell a few different pipe hanging clips here:  [1.5″ Clic Clip](https://synergyreef.com/product/1-5-clic-clip-for-pvc-support/) or [1.5″ Cobra Clip](https://synergyreef.com/product/1-5-cobra-clip/) Plumbing options for inside of the rear box: ***DO NOT GLUE*** any of the inside parts together.

OUTSIDE OF THE REAR BOX:\
\*\*Remove from tank prior to gluing pipes to avoid damage.\
\*\*DO NOT USE ABS TO PVC Transition Cement!\*\*\
\*\*DO NOT Force Dry fitted pieces into the bottom of the rear box. This could possibly damage the overflow. Only push PVC with a chamfered edge and with PVC\
Cement into the holes. \*\*\*

1. Attach 3 short pieces (approx. 4”) of 1.5” PVC to the bottom of the rear box with Medium Clear PVC Cement.
2. We recommend you using Medium Clear PVC Cement on outside of the rear box when gluing the PVC pipes to it. We have found that Standard\
   PVC Cement will work the best, but extreme care needs to be used when gluing to make sure the pipes do not slip out or the ports get damaged from too much force. If the proper amount of glue is used it will not take any force to push the pipes into the ports. 3. We recommend that you attach 3 x 1.5” Unions to the 3 pieces you just glued into the bottom of the rear box. This will allow for easy removal of the overflow if needed in the future or for moving the overflow to another tank later.

# Basic Tuning Approach

The Shadow Overflow can be used on many difference sized aquariums with various flow rates. We have designed it to be a versatile overflow for many different aquariums. To be able to work with so many systems, each needs to be tuned to the specific flow of that system. This will have to be decided by you on what best fits your specific tank needs.&#x20;

The overflow is designed with 1.5" Drains, but can be reduced down to 1" to fit your needs. 1.5" Drains are going to give you the full capacity of the overflow with 2500 GPH maximum flow. Reducing down to 1" will reduce the maximum flow rate to under 1500 GPH. This guide for tuning the overflow is based on 1.5" Drains. For 1" drains you will have to use your best judgment for tuning.&#x20;

You will need to use a [Gate Valve](https://synergyreef.com/product/1-5-grey-red-pvc-gate-valve-schedule-80/) to properly tune the overflow. We DO NOT recommend using a ball valve. Ball valves are only used for On/Off functions and not for adjusting water flow. A gate valve will allow for the proper fine tuning of the overflow's flow to properly balance the drains.

#### *The Key to tuning the overflow is balancing the flow between the primary and secondary drains. You do not want to use the gate valve to raise the water level in the rear box.*&#x20;

## We suggest starting with the basic 1.5" PVC pipe lengths listed in the below in this section. &#x20;

1. Figure out your flow rate that you are running. You may need to contact your pump manufacturer to determine your flow rate. It does not need to be exact, but within a few hundred GPH. &#x20;

2. Once you determine your flow rate, the overflow flow has 3 flow rates we like to start with tuning to, High Flow, Low Flow and Ultra Low Flow.

   * High Flow - Any system with over 1500 GPH running thru the overflow (shorter pipes needed)
   * Low Flow - Any system with 1000 to 1500 GPH running thru the overflow
   * Ultra Low Flow - Any system with under 1000 GPH running thru the overflow

3. Once you determine your flow setting for the overflow you need to adjust your internal pipe lengths to fit your needs. The following is a good starting point for each.
   * <mark style="color:red;">High Flow</mark> - Emergency x 6.75”, Primary x 2.5" to 3” + U-pipe, Secondary x 4”  with U-pipe&#x20;
   * <mark style="color:blue;">Low Flow</mark> - Emergency x 6.75”, Primary x 2.5" to 3.5” *<mark style="color:red;">**No U-pipe**</mark>*, Secondary x 5.5” to 6" *<mark style="color:red;">**No U-pipe**</mark>*
   * <mark style="color:green;">Ultra Low Flow</mark> - Emergency x 6.75”, Primary x 2.5" to 3” *<mark style="color:red;">**No U-pipe**</mark>*, Secondary x 5.75 to 6” *<mark style="color:red;">**No U-pipe**</mark>*

4. Turn on your system pump and leave the gate valve open 100%

5. Watch the flow of the drains and see what happens:&#x20;
   1. You want most, if not all of the water to be flowing down the primary drain (shortest pipe) when the gate valve is 100% open (Unless you have a <mark style="color:red;">High Flow System</mark>).&#x20;
   2. Start closing the gate valve slowly, about 1/4 turn and wait about 30 secs to 1 minute. Then continue to adjust the gate valve 1/4 turn until water just starts to barely flow into the secondary drain.&#x20;
      1. <mark style="color:green;">Ultra Low Flow</mark> - Once water barely flows into the secondary drain pipe, Stop and wait. It takes a little bit for your system to balance. Back it off with very slow turns until the water level is exactly even with the secondary drain.
      2. <mark style="color:blue;">Low Flow</mark> - Once water barely flows into the secondary drain pipe, Stop and wait. It takes a little bit for your system to balance.&#x20;
      3. <mark style="color:red;">High Flow</mark> - Water will be going down the primary and also down the secondary drain. You will use the gate valve to balance the flow to quiet the system.
   3. Make sure the water in the rear box is close covering the 2 input bulkheads coming in from the aquarium. You want the water level almost above the incoming water when finished for the quietest operation.&#x20;
   4. Wait. After getting it to the quietest setting, wait. The water does take time to balance and purge air. You may hear popping and bubbles. This is normal for initial setups. Allow it to sit before changing any internal pipe configurations.&#x20;

After tuning, In newly setup aquariums, you may still hear slight trickle noises inside the pipes or front overflow box. This is normal. As the aquarium builds up bacterial slime with the biological cycle, it will coat the inside of the pipes and your aquarium. This bio slime will help reduce any final noises you may hear.&#x20;

## Other factors

Check that your external drain pipes to your sump are sloped properly. Any up sloping can cause draining issues and create less flow to be able to run thru the drains. It also can cause noise in the rear box of the overflow. Try to not run excessively long plumbing runs to your sump. Keep it as short as possible, especially with High Flow systems.

SUMP DRAIN PIPES - Inside the sump you will need the pipes to be submerged under water. The Drain pipes need small slits cut in the pipe just below the water line to allow air to escape and not cause backup air to gurgle and belch. &#x20;

# Installing Filter Socks Only

The use of Filter Socks and No Clarisea

Prior to installation, be sure that you have everything you will need to complete the installation. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

***Using Filter Socks Only (No Clarisea):***

1. Install the 7″ or 4″ Filter sock plates that were ordered with your sump. You get one set of sock holders with the sump. The plates do have to be installed in the correct orientation or the screw holes will not align properly. Please adjust until you get the holes aligned properly.
2. Use the included thumbscrews to hold the Sock plates down to the sump brackets. See Figure A.1
3. Remove the Crash Box Weir baffle from the first chamber. There are 2 thumbscrews holding this baffle in place during shipping. See Figure A.2
4. Install the included 2 x 1″ Threaded Plugs into the 2 x 1″ Bulkhead adapters.  These holes must be plugged off if not running a Clarisea. SEE Figure A.3
5. Install your filter socks. Figure A.4 Shows how it should look.

The filter sock plates will only fit in one orientation. If the holes are misaligned, you will have to turn the plates until the screw holes match up. &#x20;

\*\*\*\****You can use either 1 or 2 SK5000 roller mats in these sumps. The flow rate into the sump will determine whether you need 1 or 2 roller mats. Each SK5000 is rated for 1300 GPH MAX, 2 SK5000s would be 2600 GPH MAX.*** If using only 1 Roller mat, must keep in the second plug in the bulkhead. But for the quietest operation we recommend keeping the flow below the SK5000 Maximum.

1. Install the “Crash Box Weir Baffle” if not already installed into the sump. (It is installed for shipping) See figure A.2:
2. Remove the Included SK Plates from the sump if installed. Look at the orientation of the plate numbers (1 and 2) before removal. They must be put back in the same location or they will not fit. The number 1 plate will be in the front position on a Left to Right flow sump. The number 2 Plate will be in the front position on a Right to Left flow sump. See Figure A.5 below
3. Completely assemble your SK5000 roller mats as per the instructions included with the roller mats. Get yourself acquainted with how this goes together as you will be slightly disassembling it to install the brackets later.
4. Remove the bottom screws on the Clarisea SK5000. Also remove the water bypass triangle if installed.
5. Slide the Included SK Plate onto the Clarisea SK5000 unit from the bottom.
6. Put the Clarisea SK5000 Screws back into the bottom of the unit.
7. Remove the next set of screws on the Clarisea Sk5000.
8. Slide the SK Plate up the SK5000 once more and install the SK5000 screws back in place. It will now look like Figure A.6
9. Reinstall Flow Bypass Triangle on the SK5000.

# Float Switch Bracket Installation (Gen1 & 2 Only)

This is for the Clarisea Gen1 and Gen2 Only

### ***Float Switch Bracket Installation:***

Gen1 and Gen2 Float Switch Brackets use a small plastic bolt and nut to attach to the clarisea SK5000. If you do not have this type of float switch then you probably have a Gen3.&#x20;

Before installing the SK5000 Gen1 or Gen2 into the sump you must first install the Float Switch Bracket. The factory float switch bracket included with the Clarisea SK5000 unit will NOT be used with our sump, since it is too short. You will receive a Float Switch bracket with your sump order from us. If you ordered before October 2021,  You will get 2 Gen1/Gen2 brackets (75mm and 100mm) per SK plate ordered. Orders after October 2021 will only get 1 Gen3 bracket (100mm) per plate ordered. If you need Gen1 or Gen2 brackets you will need to purchase then from us as we no longer include them with the sump. The brackets will determine when your roller mat advances. The stock float switch bracket will not function properly. The new float switch bracket will allow for the roll to advance properly.  There are a lot of factors that influence how much and how fast the roll will advance, such as water level in the sump, GPH Flow thru your sump and sediment levels in your system, ect. Below is a photo of our float switch bracket installed in the Clarisea SK5000 Gen2.

# Float Switch Bracket Installation (SK5000 Gen3 Only)

This is for the Clarisea Gen3 Only

The SK5000 Gen3 uses a float switch that clips onto the unit. You will need to use the float switch bracket(s) that was included with the Sump.&#x20;

### ***Float Switch Bracket Installation:***

Before installing the SK5000 Gen3 into the sump you must first install one of the included Float Switch Bracket that came with the sump. The factory float switch bracket included with the Clarisea SK5000 unit will NOT be used with our sump as it is too short. You will receive 1 Float Switch bracket with your order from us. If you choose the option for 2 Clarisea plates with your order, you will receive 2 Brackets. If you did not receive the brackets with your sump, please email us <support@synergyreef.com>

The brackets will determine when your roller mat advances and are necessary for the sump to perform properly. There are a lot of factors that influence this such as water level in the sump, GPH Flow thru your sump and sediment levels in your system. Below is a photo of our float switch bracket with the Clarisea SK5000 Gen3 float switch installed.

# Installing the Clarisea SK5000 into the sump

Installing the SK5000 V2.1, V2.2 and V3

\*\*\****You can use either 1 or 2 SK5000 roller mats in these sumps. The flow rate into the sump will determine whether you need 1 or 2 roller mats. While each SK5000 is rated for 1200 GPH MAX, or 2 for 2400 GPH MAX, Flow rates thru this sump may be lower based on our testing. If using only 1 Roller mat, you need to keep the plug in the second bulkhead on the empty side with no clarisea SK5000. For the best operation we recommend keeping the flow below the SK5000's  Maximum flow rate.***

1. Double check that the “Crash Box Weir Baffle” if not already, is installed into the sump. See [figure A.2 Here](/installation-manuals/sk-sump-installation/installing-filter-socks-only):
2. Remove the SK Access Panel’s 6 Thumbscrews and Panel. See Figure A.7 below.
3. Make sure to have the SK5000’s 1″ drain flow tube installed into the unit.
4. Place the Clarisea SK5000 into the desired chamber. The number 1 plate will be in the front position on a Left to Right flow sump. The number 2 Plate will be in the front position on a Right to Left flow sump. See Figure A.5 below
5. Remove the 1″ Threaded plug from the desired bulkhead adapter for use.
6. If needed, you may have to align the SK5000 white 1" input tube with the bulkhead adapter (The bulkhead may shift during shipping). You can loosen the 1″ Bulkhead nut from the back side (seen below in FIGURE A.\* circled in Blue) and adjust while screwing in the 1" SK5000 tube. Then re-tighten the bulkhead nut after putting the thumbscrews into place on the SK Plate.
7. Use the SK Access hole and slowly screw in the SK5000’s 1″ Drain Flow tube into the included 1″ Bulkhead. This only needs to be slightly screwed in and DO NOT Overtighten it. It will be hard to remove later if it is over tightened and can also damage the threads on the bulkhead or clarisea pipe.&#x20;
8. Close the water bypass triangle on the SK5000 all the way. This will not need to be used unless you have too much flow thru the Clarisea SK5000.
9. Do the same for the second Clarisea if you are using 2 of them.
10. You are now ready to turn on your return pump on your system!

# Using 1 Clarisea By Itself and/or 1 Filter Sock (or No Socks)

## Using 1 Clarisea and 1 Filter Sock (or no Socks) -&#x20;

While we do not recommend this setup, it is possible to use it this way if you so choose to.

You can use 1 Clarisea SK5000 and no socks. The steps below will explain how to setup this configuration.&#x20;

1. If using only one Clarisea SK5000, Follow[ Installing the Clarisea SK5000 into the sump ](/installation-manuals/sk-sump-installation/installing-the-clarisea-sk5000-into-the-sump)instructions first. Then move on to step 2. below.&#x20;
2. Make sure the 1" Plug is screwed into the empty section where no Clarisea will be used.&#x20;
3. Install the included filter sock plate into the empty space. No filter sock is needed unless you want to have one in there.
4. It can be run with no sock in the holder if you choose as well, but you may get some trickle noise. Having a filter sock in the empty chamber can help to reduce noise if your flow is more than the Clarisea can handle.&#x20;
5. You are now ready to turn on your return pump on your system!


# Trouble Shooting

## Basic SK Sump Troubleshooting

1. ***The water level in the crash box is flowing over the top of the Crash Box Weir Baffle:***
   * Make sure that your flow is not more than the recommended flow rate of the Clarisea SK5000 ( *Each SK5000 is rated for 1300 GPH MAX, 2 SK5000s would be 2600 GPH MAX)*
   * Did you install the proper float switch brackets? Please see the Float Switch Bracket Installation instructions for your Gen SK5000 Listed here: [Gen1& Gen2](/installation-manuals/sk-sump-installation/float-switch-bracket-installation-gen1-and-2-only) or [Gen3](/installation-manuals/sk-sump-installation/float-switch-bracket-installation-sk5000-gen3-only)
   * If you have the proper flow rates listed rates and proper float switch bracket installed, you may need to modify the Clarisea's input pipe as the inlet vents can restrict the flow into the clarisea. The slots in the input tube may be too small and need to be opened up to allow more flow into the clarisea. Make sure that the slots are facing upwards when installed in the Clarisea or you can get air trapped in the pipe and reduce flow rates. These slots over time can also build up with bio slime or algae and cause the SK5000 not to function properly or totally reduce flow. This needs to be done at your own risk as we are not responsible for any parts on your clariseas. Please see the photo below:

# Things Needed for Setup

## Prior to installation:

* [ ] Cut Drain Pipes - You will need to cut PVC Pipes that will be used inside the crash box section of the sump for each drain bulkhead. These pipes are not included with the sump. They Should be a minimum of 4" below the water level in the crashbox. Cut slits in the sides of the pipe near the top where it goes into the bulkheads. This will allow air to escape and reduce bubbles getting into the clariseas. A 45 Degree taper on the ends will also help.

# RM34 Sump Setup

Installation Instructions for the RM34 (RedSea ReefMat 500) sump

We have designed this sump to be able to run 1 Red Sea® ReefMat 500 Fleece Rollermat.  Very easy to drop in your RedSea ReefMat 500 and get running. No Modifications needed. This sump also gives you flexibility of using just filter socks and a refugium.

This sump will accommodate up to 2 x 4″ filter socks. It will only work with the RSR ReefMat 500 and 1 sock or with no ReefMat  and 2 x 4″ filter socks. (ReefMat section can then be used as a Refugium).  2 mechanical filtration sections (Fleece Rollermat, or Filter Socks & Skimmer). We recommend this sump for tanks up to 150 gallons.


# Filter Socks Only

Installing Filter Socks only

When using the filter socks only, you will need to have purchased the Optional filter sock holders. These can be purchased any time, even after you have your sump. We have installed the bracket in the sump on all RM34s. Figure A.1 Shows the sump with the Filter Socks installed.&#x20;

# Installing a RedSea ReefMat 500

RedSea ReefMat 500 Installatio

There are 3 different ways to connect the Reefmat 500. With all three ways you need to NOT have the roll installed and separate the top part of the rollermat from the bottom portion. You only need the bottom portion of the RM500 when connecting the plumbing. This will give you plenty of room to connect it to the sump or tank drain.

We prefer 1 or 2, but all three will work fine. Everyone's system will be different and it really depends on how you want to plumb it.

# Option 1

Steps for Installation Option 1

You only need the bottom portion of the RM500 when connecting the plumbing. Remove the top roller part first! This will give you plenty of room to connect it to the sump or tank drain.

1. Remove one of the 1" bulkheads from the sump.&#x20;
2. Use the included Tube from the RM500 and push it thru the bulkhead opening where you removed the the bulkhead.&#x20;
3. Connect the RM500 to the screw fitting on the black tube.&#x20;
4. Put the ReefMat 500 into the sump.
5. Then pull the black tube slack up and connect the end of the black tube to a 1" PVC pipe or directly to your tank drain.&#x20;
6. Reassemble the top portion of the reefmat to the bottom of the reef mat and load your roll.

&#x20;The RS tube will slip over 1" PVC and how it was designed to work with their tanks. See Figure A.1 for details.&#x20;

# Option 2

Steps for Installation Option 2

3. Connect the RM500 to the screw fitting on the black tube.
4. Put the RM into the sump.&#x20;
5. Trim the black Tube to desired length above the hole in the sump.
6. Attach the RS union (Included with the RM500) to the black tube. The union will be outside of the sump, basically where the 1" bulkhead originally was.&#x20;
7. &#x20;  Connect 1" PVC to the union.
8. Reassemble the top portion of the reefmat to the bottom of the reef mat and load your roll.

# Option 3

Steps for Installation Option 3

You only need the bottom portion of the RM500 when connecting the plumbing. Remove the top roller part first! This will give you plenty of room to connect it to the sump or tank drain.

1. Leave the 1" bulkhead in the sump.&#x20;
2. Cut an approx. 20" piece of the black RS tube.
3. Connect the RM500 to the screw fitting on the black tube.
4. Slide a piece of 1" PVC into the other end of the black tube.
5. Connect the 1" PVC to the bottom of the bulkhead.&#x20;
6. NO Glue is required. Just slip fit. The Black tube will be in a semi S shape and be pointed towards the front of the sump.&#x20;
7. &#x20;Plumb your aquarium drain to the 1" bulkhead.

# RM44 Sump Setup

There are 2 different ways to connect your RedSea ReefMat to the sump. The next pages will describe how we recommend connection.&#x20;

Connect the fittings together as seen in Figure A.3 and A.4. You DO NOT need to glue these pieces together.&#x20;

Once you have the Dual Drain Manifold assembled, you can then attach it to the 2 drain bulkheads located inside the RM44 sump (See FIGURE A.7 below). The 3 drain can be used as an emergency drain. &#x20;

# RM72 Sump Setup

Installation Instructions for the RM72 (RedSea ReefMat 1200) sump

Thank you for choosing the Synergy Reef RM Series Sump. These instructions will assist you in setting up your new sump. This manual is used for the RM72 reefmat sump.

We do not provide setup support or warranty support on the RedSea Reefmat products. You would need to contact RedSea for this support. Due to hundreds of different aquarium setups, pumps, sumps, ect, Synergy Reef DOES NOT Provide system setup or design consultation. We can provide basic installation assistance, but setup and tuning to your aquarium is up to you. If you are not capable of doing this, please hire a professional to do so.*

# Installing the RedSea ReefMat 1200 into the sump

Installing the RS ReefMat 1200

\*\*\****You can use either 1 or 2 RM1200 roller mats in these sumps. The flow rate into the sump will determine whether you need 1 or 2 roller mats. Each SK5000 is rated for 1200 GPH MAX, so 2 will be 2400 GPH MAX. If using only 1 Roller mat, you can use 1 filter sock as well. For the quietest operation we recommend keeping the flow below the SK5000's  Maximum flow rate.***

#### Basic connection of the RM1200 to the sump.

* You can use the corrugated black pipe that is included with the RM1200 and the adapters that Redsea has included. But be aware that you need to use a 1.5" to 1" PVC adapter for this to work as they only include a 1" PVC connection for the stock plumbing.&#x20;

Determine how you drain into your sump. There are 2 ways to connect the RM1200 to each section in the RM72 Sump.

# Single (1) Drain into 1 ReefMat 1200

#### For higher flow we recommend using 1.5" PVC Pipe plumbed directly into the ReefMat1200 with our included 1.5" to RM adapter.&#x20;

Pre Installation:

1. Find the included 1.5" to RM adapter that we have included with your sump (It may be white or black). &#x20;
2. Connect the adapter to the input of the RM1200 as shown in See figure A.1 below.
3. Attach legs to ReefMat
4. #### Build the PVC Manifold (See FIGURE A.2 Below)

   Here is a list of the parts needed all PVC is 1.5" Sch40:

   * [ ] 1 x 7" PVC in Length

5. Connect Manifold to center 1.5" Bulkhead on the sump.  &#x20;
6. Slide the RM1200 with RM adapter into the 90-degree Street Elbow fitting. No Glue is needed, or recommended, just pressure fit.  See Figure A.3

Connect the fittings together as seen in Figure A.3 and A.4. You DO NOT need to glue these pieces together.&#x20;

Once you have the Dual Drain Manifold assembled, you can then attach it to the 2 drain bulkheads located inside the RM72 sump (See FIGURE A.7 below). If you are using only 1 RM1200, You can use either section for the RM1200 and use the other empty section for a refugium or other equipment. If you are using 1 RM1200 only, then you can move on to the Baffle Adjustment section.

If you are using 2 RM1200s, You will make another one of these manifolds and install it in the second chamber of the RM72 Sump.&#x20;

### Nonfunctional Items and Warranties

It's important to us that our products reflect quality and durability. We work hard to design and manufacture products that are sustainable, and that components can be replaced without discarding the whole product. We want you to own our products for life!

If your product does not function correctly or is otherwise considered broken, we will troubleshoot the technical issues to help solve problems. We only provide diagnosis of non functional items and not Installation assistance as mentioned in our “Troubleshooting” section. Please use the [Contact Us](https://synergyreef.com/contact-us/) page and include your order # or your account information. If you do not provide this information, this can delay a response from us.

**LIMITED WARRANTY**

Synergy Reef Systems makes no claim to the suitability of this product for any specific use. The end user is solely responsible for determining fitness for a particular use, and for installation. This product is sold as a component of a custom aquarium installation.

Our Products are warranted to be free of manufacture defects for a period of 6 Months from date of purchase. We will, at our discretion, repair or replace your product at no charge during this period. Some items may need to be returned to Synergy Reef Systems for repairs, at the discretion of Synergy Reef Systems. Return shipping to Synergy Reef Systems is the responsibility of the purchaser. This warranty does not cover accidental damage, misuse, improper care or alteration, or acts of God, such as floods and earthquakes. Coverage terminates if the original purchaser sells or otherwise transfers the product. Purchaser must provide sales receipt from authorized dealer. This warranty excludes claims for incidental or consequential damages, loss of revenue or profits, loss of business, or other financial loss in connection with the warranty problem.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary from state to state or country to country.

**IMPORTANT NOTICE: Read this entire Limited Warranty before purchasing, installing, or using this product. By purchasing, installing, or using this product, you are acknowledging that this Limited Warranty is part of the sale terms.**

**COVERED PRODUCTS. This Limited Warranty applies to all SYNERGY REEF OVERFLOWS (hereinafter referred to as the “Covered Products”). SYNERGY REEF makes the following express limited warranties for the Covered Products purchased and installed within the United States, subject to the conditions and limitations stated below.**

**These limited warranties are the exclusive warranties for the Covered Products. SYNERGY REEF disclaims all warranties, express or implied, for other products.**

**LIMITED WARRANTIES. SYNERGY REEF warrants to the Buyer that the Covered Products shall be free of manufacturing defects in material or workmanship that significantly impair their proper use or function of the Covered Products subject to the conditions of this Section. SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS disclaims all warranties, express or implied, to subsequent purchasers or users. If the Buyer gives SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS notice as required below of a defect in materials or workmanship, SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS shall, at its sole option: (1) send appropriate necessities needed for purchaser to do the repairs  (2) have purchaser send back product for repair or replace the defective products; (3) refund the original purchase price after return of defective item(s). SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS shall pay all associated labor costs for repairs or replacements if Buyer gives proper notice as required below within 3 months from date of purchase. SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS may, in its sole discretion, pay some or all of the labor costs for repairs or replacement for claims made after 3 months from date of purchase. Replacement products may not exactly match replaced products.**

**Buyer is responsible for shipping of product back to SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS for warranty any repairs. SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS will cover shipping costs of the repaired or replaced item(s) back to the buyer.**

**NO LABOR.** **These limited warranties do NOT include labor or any other costs incurred for service, maintenance, repair, removing, replacing, installing, complying with local building and electric codes, shipping or handling. For items that are designed to be maintained or replaced by the original owner, the original owner is solely responsible for all labor and other costs of maintaining, installing, replacing, disconnecting or dismantling the System and parts in connection with owner-required maintenance.**&#x20;

**WHAT THIS LIMITED WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER. SYNERGY REEF SYSTEMS  is not responsible for and makes no warranties as to the following: 1) product failures or damages due to normal wear and tear, exposure to excessive heat or moisture, corrosive chemicals or substances, improper installation, defects or conditions of the existing structure, misuse, abuse, modifications, and alterations; and 2) minor imperfections that do not affect the Covered Product’s structural integrity or use.**

**DISCLAIMER OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES. Neither SYNERGY REEF, nor its authorized dealers, make any other warranties, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. In the event this disclaimer is deemed limited or ineffective, the terms and limitations of any implied warranties shall be the same as the express limited warranties contained herein.**

**LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. This Limited Warranty sets forth SYNERGY REEF’s maximum liability for Covered Products. IN NO EVENT SHALL SYNERGY REEF OR ITS AUTHORIZED DEALERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR SPECIAL DAMAGE RESULTING FROM THE SALE, INSTALLATION, OR USE OF ANY COVERED PRODUCTS INCLUDING DAMAGE TO YOUR RESIDENCE, FURNITURE OR ANY AQUARIUM INHABITANTS. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation may not apply to you. If SYNERGY REEF provides any of the remedies identified above (i.e. repair, replace, or return of the original purchase price), then Buyer agrees that this limitation of remedy shall not have failed the essential purpose of the Limited Warranty. IN NO CASE SHALL SYNERGY REEF’S LIABILITY EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE COVERED PRODUCTS. IF YOU DISAGREE WITH THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS DO NOT USE THE COVERED PRODUCT.**

**NOTICE OF CLAIM. Buyer shall promptly notify SYNERGY REEF of any claim under this Limited Warranty. SYNERGY REEF reserves the right to deny any claims made by the Buyer more than 6 months after any defect or other basis of a claim covered by this Limited Warranty is discovered by the Buyer or should have been discovered by the Buyer.**

**CLAIM PROCEDURE. You should make claims under this Limited Warranty in writing to SYNERGY REEF via email to <sales@synergyreef.com>. Claims to SYNERGY REEF should include the following information: (1) the claimant’s name, address, and telephone number; (2) the installation address; (3) the product description, purchase price, and the date and location of purchase; (4) copy of the sales invoice or receipt; (5) a description of your product concerns (you may include photos); and (6) a brief summary of the attempts you made to address the concerns. SYNERGY REEF reserves the right to charge a fee for on-site product inspections.**

**ENTIRE AGREEMENT. This Limited Warranty, and all of the terms and limitations contained herein, constitutes the entire agreement between SYNERGY REEF and the Buyer. By purchasing, installing, or using the Covered Products, Buyer is not relying on any oral statements made by anyone, including its authorized dealers, which are in any way different or contrary to the terms and limitations of this Limited Warranty. By purchasing, installing, or using any of the Covered Products, Buyer acknowledges that authorized dealerships are not agents of SYNERGY REEF and any statements or representations made by authorized dealerships and their employees are not attributable to SYNERGY REEF.**

**Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusions may not apply to you. SYNERGY REEF’S warranty is governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, excluding its conflict of laws principles and excluding the provisions of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the**

**International Sale of Goods. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary from state to state.**
